How to catch the bus in Galway City

Catching a local bus in Galway City:

  1. Go to the correct bus stop (see for Main Bus Stops for central city stops), at the right time (see City Bus Details for route maps and timetable links)
HINT:  it's a good idea to be at the bus-stop five minutes early, in case the bus-driver's watch is fast.
  2. If there are a lot of people waiting for the bus, they do not often do not all stand in a queue (ie a line).   Watch out for what order people arrive at the bus stop:  usually people get on in the order in which the arrived.   Or if it's a very large number of people, the ones closest to the door get in first.
  3. Get your fare or bus-ticket out before the bus arrives (see Fares for details)
  4. When you see the bus coming, you don't usually need to signal to the driver.  But it may be a good idea to do so if the bus-stop is used by several different buses or is not a popular one. To signal the driver, raise your arm in front of you.   Or, if the bus that is coming is not the one you want, shake your head.
  5. When the bus arrives, wait for any passengers who are getting off (Galway city buses only have one door)
  6. Get on to the bus and either show the driver your pass or all-day ticket or pay a cash fare.   To do this:
On Bus Éireann, give your fare to the bus driver and wait for him/her to give you a ticket OR
On City Direct, put it in the box on your left.or show the driver your pass if you are using a weekly or monthly ticket or Travel Pass.
  7. Sit in any seat that is available - but leave the ones very close to the door for people who are elderly / disabled, or who have children in prams etc.   If the bus is a double-decker (ie has two storeys), then there will often be seats free upstairs.

How to get off the bus:

  1. Wait until the bus has gone past the stop before the one you want.
  2. Push the bell - usually a square red button on the poles in the middle of the bus, with one every two or three rows.
Once the bell is pushed, a sign near the front of the bus usually lights up saying "bus stopping" - once this is lit, the bell does not need to be pushed again.
  3. When the bus reaches your stop, get off:   Some people stand up and walk to the door before the bus stops, so they can get off immediately.  But you should only do this if it is safe:  the bus is travelling fast, or your are unsteady on your feet for any reason, do not stand up until the bus has stopped.

If the driver accidentally misses your stop or starts to leave before you have reached the door, either call out or go up to him/her and remind him: don't just wait for the next stop, because it may be a long way away.

Return to the city buses FAQ page

Will the driver stop between bus-stops for me?

Bus drivers in Ireland are not supposed to pick up or set down passengers anywhere except at marked bus stops.

To get a licence to operate a bus-service, companies have to get the local gardai (police) to approve the bus-stop sites they intend to use.  This is to ensure that the stops are safe for passengers, and do not cause traffic disruptions.

If buses stop at places other than the agreed bus-stops, they are breaking the terms of their licences.   If you ask a bus-driver to stop at a place other than an approved bus-stop, you are asking them to break the law.

Some common-sense is applied, for example when a bus is diverted because of road works or some other hazard, it will generally stop at suitable places along the diversion route.

NB:  for regional buses, the approved bus stops are not necessarily the same for all companies, and some of the private company bus-stops are not marked with a sign).

An Post Tuam Rd mail sorting & parcel collection centre (Ionad Poist na Gaillmhe - Galway Mails Centre)

Public Transport Directions

Catch the 405 - Ballybane bus.

Get off at either:
  • The Trappers Inn stop: this is the third stop after Liosbán estate, and is just after Riverside estate:   from here, walk up the Tuam Rd. Cross the road in both directions (ie north and east) at the traffic lights, and follow the main road (it veers slightly to the left). Keep going past the entrance to Ballybane industrial estate.
  • The Ballybrit Industrial estate - this is the last stop on the route.   From here, go back towards the traffic lights - but instead turn right into the top entrance of Ballybane Industrial estate.   Walk through the estate (shown in blue on the map), dropping down to the left at the end of the road.  When you reach the main-road intersection, turn right.

Keep walking past the North Park retail/industrial estate.

The An Post office is in the next small estate, which is called the City North complex.  It is at the top of the driveway, however the driveway entrance comes before the estate so keep an eye out for it.

Either way, this walk takes 10-15 minutes.   There is a footpath the whole way, and the traffic lights have made crossing the road safer.   The walk through Ballybane Industrial may be slightly shorter, but the bus takes longer to get there.

An alternative public transport option

Catch the 409-Parkmore or 401-Parkmore bus.

Get off at the last stop, which is just after the racecourse. Cross the roundabout, and continue to walk straight up Parkmore Road until you come to an intersection: this is the Tuam Rd. Turn left, and continue walking back towards the city until you reach the City North complex.

This walk is longer, but may suit people from some areas better.  However there is no footpath on this section of the Tuam road - it may not be a good area for pedestrians.

Some maps (including Google) show a road called "Ballybrit Cresent" going past the racecourse and down to Tuam Rd. However some parts of this road do not exist, so it is not an option for this trip

Hints for collecting parcels

  • Check An Post's card for information about getting your parcel re-delivered.   Often you can ask them to re-deliver items to an alternative address, but not to the same one.
  • Don't go to the sorting centre on the same day that you receive a card about having a parcel - because your parcel with still be out with your postie.
  • Take the card telling you about the parcel and photo ID with you.
  • There are no regular Post Office services here: you cannot post parcels or purchase stamps from this office.  However you can lodge franked or stamped mail, close-off time is 6pm.

Contacting the parcel depot

The phone number for the parcel centre is (091) 778 724

Or you can contact them via An Post's main Postal customer service number:
  • CallSave 1850 57 58 59 or
  • 01-7057600

Galway Street Maps

Paper-based maps:

A small tourist map of the city centre (east of the Corrib) is available free from the Tourist Office (shown with a green "I" on this map - which also shows the main Eyre Square bus-stops)

Galway Street Map is a fold-out Ordinance Survey map of the city streets.

On-line Maps:

Google maps

Maps on GalwayTransport.info are created in Google maps.

Features: search by street or place name, mark places of interest, create custom maps, include other people's places in your map, measure distances, draw shapes etc.

Issues:  The River Corrib isn't shown in street-map view (at 20 Jan 10).   A few suburban street names are wrong or missing, and some roads that don't exist are shown.   Street-data-quality is controlled by Google's data-providers, and it is possible to report problems and get them fixed (search on the Google-maps site for details).

Open Street Map

This is an initiative to "create[] and provide[] free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps ... have legal or technical restrictions on their use". Data comes from "public domain or open licensed sources", or volunteers who map areas using GPS devices and load it.

It has a very high level of detail for Galway City, including pedestrian paths and laneways which are not on Google or Yahoo maps (eg Terryland Forest Park walkways, paths through the middle of Eyre Square and pedestrian paths around the NUIG Newcastle campus, walkways around Barna Woods). And for most road junctions / intersections which are traffic light controlled, you can see a traffic light symbol if you zoom in enough).

Smaller towns eg Athenry, Ballinasloe, Tuam, aren’t mapped to the same high level of detail as Galway City. Hopefully someone will map those soon.

Yahoo Maps

Doesn't (yet) have all the functions of Google.  Does show the Corrib and maps generally look good. Data quality not yet assessed.

Multimaps

Yet another system. Doesn't show the Corrib, and has Pearse Stadium in totally the wrong place. But overall data-quality is reported to be good.

Galway City Council mapping tools

The council provides these maps for areas within the City boundaries.  Some only work with Internet Explorer.
  • Street Index - the official list of gazetted street names
  •  Map Zone - a list of various maps
  • City Map Guide - a very detailed set of maps, mainly used for planning work.

-->

Galway County Council Public Mapping System

This does not have a street name search and covers the County area only. Works with Internet Explorer only: may need to install some extra utilities to use the system (their page has details)

How are bus-services in Galway organised?

Regional Buses:
See the FAQ section for regional/national buses - coming soon.

City Buses:

Almost all city bus routes in Galway:
  • start at Eyre Square,
  • travel from the city-centre to one or more suburbs
  • turn around (sometimes at a terminal or roundabout, or sometimes by doing a loop)
  • return to Eyre Square (sometimes along the same route, sometimes through different suburbs).
If a bus-route does a loop, passengers can get on to the bus at any point and stay on it, without paying another fare, until it reaches the city centre.

Some individual buses do a "through route":  they start at the end of one route, travel into the city along that route, pause at Eyre Square, and then do another route.  The most common through-route services are:

  • 1S/D (Salthill) and 8 (Mervue)
  • 2E (Lisbeg Lawn/Renmore) - 2W (Seacrest)
  • 4E (Merlin Park) - 4W (Newcastle)
  • 5E (Ballybane) - 5W (Rahoon)
When a bus is operating a through-route service like this, only one fare is paid for the whole trip.  However not every individual bus on these routes operates through to the other destination.

Some individual services also continue straight through to another location. Bus Éireann timetables show this with footnotes: eg the 7:40pm #3 service from Ballybrit is marked "continues to Newcastle".  There is no guarantee that the "continues to ..." marked on the timetable is still correct, as some have been changed for operational reasons. Passengers may need to to switch buses (and pay an additional fare) at Eyre Square.

Who is responsible for public transport / public transit services in Galway?

No one organisation is responsible for public transport in Galway, or any area in Ireland.

The Ministry of Transport is responsible for licensing commercially operated scheduled bus and ferry services.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) is responsible for
"securing the provision of public passenger land transport services. This includes the provision of subvented bus and rail services by Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus and Irish Rail."
It is expected that the NTA will
"take over responsibility for the licensing of commercial bus services and the regulation of the small public service vehicle sector during 2010."

Galway City Council has a Transportation Unit. but its remit is limited to the City area.  Also, local councils are consulted when bus-services are licensed, but the do not run services, and decisions are made by the central agencies.

The unit is involved in a number of projects to improve the public-transport infrastructure in the city, and in planning for future services.

Local transport operators must obtain a licence for any public bus service that they want to run.  When this page was first written, there were allowed to provide public information about their services, but not required to do so.   More recent licences do require companies to provide public information.

GalwayTransport.info (GT.I ie this website) is a private initiative that aims to provide public information, for both residents and visitor, about public transport that is available in Galway. In general, it does not show information about planned changes until they are confirmed and have a clear start-date.

Bus shelters in Galway city

Some bus-shelters in Galway city are owned by Bus Eireann, and others are owned by Galway City Council.  The City Council is gradually replacing older shelters with new ones that it owns.

New shelters are being installed on route 9 and route 33, starting in Autumn 2009.  See the council web-site for more details about this.  It is hoped to extend this programme, under which the shelters are funded and maintained from advertising displayed in the, to other areas of the city.

Bus fares and fare-zones in Galway

Galway City Services

Almost all regular Galway city services have a flat-rate single fare, no matter how far you travel. See the Fares page for details.

Some special scheduled services (eg park-and-ride, the Corrib Village shuttle on Fri/Sun, and the "factory run" buses to the Parkmore industrial estate) have a different fare. See the timetable/details for these services for more information.

Regional Services

Regional services have fares are based on the distance traveled and the type of ticket (eg same-day-return, one-month-return). See the bus-company websites for details.
Note:  For Bus Eireann, regional services are ones that display three-digit route numbers, eg 418.

How are bus stops marked?

Bus stops in Galway are marked with road markings (generally a box painted on the road in white, with the word "Bus" painted inside it), and with a sign.  The sign is either attached to a bus shelter, or to a convenient lamppost or building.   Most signs are at right angles to the road, but a few are parallel, making them hard to spot for passengers and bus-drivers alike.

Bus stop signs used in Galway City include:

This bus-stop sign is for City Direct bus stops.

This bus-stop sign is for Bus Eireann services at Eyre Square - one side of the sign shows the destination in English, the other side shows it in Irish.

In general, city buses will use any marked bus-stop on their route, no matter which type of sign is at it.  There are some exceptions in the Knocknacarra area, where Bus Eireann and City Direct buses do not use each others stops.

What destination signs do Galway city buses show?

City to suburbs:
When a Galway city bus is travelling from Eyre Square out to the suburbs, it has signs that show the route number, and the route-name.

The signs may be at the top-centre of the windscreen in a special display box, or they may be printed cards which are manually placed in the front window.

The route-name may be in English and Irish, or alternate between English and Irish every few seconds.

Suburbs to city:
When a Galway city bus is travelling from the suburbs back towards Eyre Square, it may show any of these as the route number:
  • 0
  • the route number it is travelling along
  • the route number for the "through route" service that it will operate next,
and any one of these as the destination:
  • Eyre Square / An Faiche Mhór  An Faiche Mhor
  • Town Centre / Lár Baile   Lar Baile
  • City Centre / An Lár    An Lar
  • the route name of the suburb is it coming back from
  • route name for the "through route" service that it will operate next.
The range of destination signs can make it confusing to work out where a particular bus is heading to:  if you are in any doubt, ask the bus driver.

Other options:
There are a range of other destination signs that may also be used including the following (English and Irish translations shown):
  • Out of service /  As Seirbhís   Serbhis
(ie not currently operating for passengers)

  • Park and Ride /  Fág an Carr - Tóg an Bus   (fag an carr - tog an bus)
(for buses operating a dedicated park-and-ride service, with limited stops between the pick-up point and the destination)

  • School Bus / Bus Schoile
